What people say about (Black Bear Golf Club, TopTracer Range & Restaurant)

Richard Yu

5 star course layout, 4 star pro shop + facility (for a rural area), 3 star course condition. The golf course is probably one of the best in the area that features wide open links style. You fight against the elements of wind, undulating green and unforgiving bunkers. At some holes in the back nines, I thought I was in Ireland. P.B. Dye did a great job designing this golf course. But the course conditions make me think twice about coming back here even at a discounted green fee. If you are not a serious golfer, then it would be a great opportunity to learn to play link style golf course. But if you are a serious golfer and every shot counts, then you will be disappointed.

Black Bear Golf Club has a lot of nice qualities for a course in such a rural location. It seems like they’ve invested in upgrading the clubhouse and facilities, as they have that old time feel with more modern amenities like a TopTracer range. The course itself has a lot of potential and the bones are strong. If you are a high-to-mid handicapper, you will love it, as there aren’t any holes where you have to worry about losing a ball until the 18th. As for the course, it’s kept in decent shape, but not resort shape. Both the fairways and greens were good, with the occasional subpar area with bald spots or crab grass. I would definitely recommend playing Black Bear at least once, because my wife and I definitely enjoyed our round, but unless you live nearby I’m not sure it would warrant a repeat visit.

second time playing Black Bear. first time was over 10 years ago. had a great experience again. excellent value on a quality course. so many community courses these days are run down with deferred maintenance. Not Black Bear. Fair ways and green were in excellent shape. some tee boxes could use some TLC, but did not detract from a very nice golf course. hopefully, it won't be another ten years. too good a course.
