I’ve been coming to this range for years, but today left me with a terrible feeling after an upsetting, racially charged encounter. After purchasing a bucket of balls and finishing up at the range, my mom and I went over to the putting green to practice. An older white man in a hat, unclear if he worked there or he was just there, approached us immediately and began questioning whether we had paid. He assumed we hadn’t purchased a bucket and said, rudely, “You can’t play here unless you’re a member.” I politely explained that we were just practicing and that the posted rules clearly state that use of the putting green is allowed with a bucket purchase. Instead of listening, he changed his story and said, “Read the rules,” in a condescending tone, as if I didn’t understand English. I reiterated that we had already purchased a bucket, but then he kept saying that since there were two of us, we needed to prove we bought two buckets. I pushed back, and only then did he back off and say he would “let us play.” Let us? Who is he to decide that? And why approach us with such hostility and suspicion in the first place? I told him not to speak to us like that and that we would just walk away. My mom is the kindest and most respectful person- you won’t find a more polite guest here. We didn’t deserve to be treated this way. As an Asian woman, I’m always vigilant when I’m with my mother, and this kind of interaction leaves a lasting, painful impact. This place needs to do better. If that man works here (maybe he was pretending to work there because the front desk person was really nice) I hope the management seriously reconsiders who they allow to represent them.
