What people say about (Hillcrest Golf Club)

Derek Young

I very rarely write reviews of any kind, but this course deserves some feedback. Probably the course with the absolute most potential to be a great course, but unfortunately doesn’t receive the attention for care and maintenance that comes with a higher end course. I have played over 80 courses in the Phoenix area and while the first few holes are definitely more like a municipal run course, it starts to pick up and become more scenic, challenging and interesting all the way to the end, but still lacks the maintenance all around with overgrown palm trees, lots of dry patches and general wear and tear not dealt with, even though there is an abundance of water in the middle of the course. With the amount of courses that each other course has to compete to get your attention, this course felt like it was a great course at one time, but the budget golfers that are in the area don’t allow for this course to charge enough for the experience to live up to its potential. For what it was worth (metaphorically and fiscally) it was a good course and I would probably play it again in a different season to see how it compares, which is rare for me, as I’ve only found 1/3 of the courses I’ve played worth returning to and this one deserves another shot.

We play here each trip to the Phoenix area. It’s really nice that they don’t charge an arm and a leg like most courses in March. We really enjoy this course. It’s a risk reward tee shot on quite a few holes and if you’re accurate you can cut some corners and have some really good birdie chances, but also gives you room to play safe. And this was by far the best condition it’s ever been in since we’ve been coming down. Very green and maintained. My only complaint is we had the first tee time out so we could play in a couple hours but some entitled old guys jumped out and slowed us up quite a bit but I don’t believe the clubhouse was even aware they did it so not really their fault as they don’t implement starters. I’m about a 3 handicap and I’ve shot 71 to 77 so you can definitely have some fun here. We will continue to visit each trip!

Great course and in great condition! Special layout with elevation changes and water. Fun course every time you play. People who work there are laid back and take care of the clients.
