What people say about (Lake Gaston Golf Club)

Not sure how this has a 4 star rating. Hands down, one of the worst maintained courses I have ever played. Tee boxes were mostly sand, hardly any grass to be found. I understand that there's seasonly challenges to maintaining a course, but this is beyond that.

My sister and I planned to play 9 holes at 7:30 in the morning on a Saturday. While the website lacked much information (e.g., rates, hours of operation), it had some great descriptions on how to approach each hole and a lovely course map showing a driving range, so I was hopeful. We arrived well ahead of our tee time so we could warm up. The receptionists (2 cute little old ladies) told us there was no driving range but that we could go off the back 9 right away if we wanted an early start. This is a very rustic course with some potential - woods, hills, ponds, creeks. It is not well maintained - the tee areas (mostly grassless) were hard enough at times a hammer might have helped getting tees into the ground, the fairways had many areas of hardpan dirt, the greens were heavy and pockmarked. After playing the 10th hole we saw a tee area immediately next to the 10th green but it looked like a long dog-leg to the right while the scorecard showed it to be a short straight hole. After teeing off, we learned from a groundskeeper that we were on the 18th hole and that the 11th was to be found by winding our way around a few other holes. A little signage would have been helpful (of note, we saw many other signs at other holes, so this was an aberration). The course has some lovely terrain and many natural areas. It has potential, but needs some love. Addition-my sister and I went back on Tuesday morning. We had tried to call for a tee time on Monday afternoon, but there was no answer on the phone and no voice mail. We arrived to learn that the course had closed Monday after 2 pm and was going to close again. Would have been nice to have a message on their phone. Anyway, we played the front 9. These holes were better maintained than the back 9, but still need attention, especially the greens. Two of the holes, a par 3 and a par 4, require tee shots over a GORGEOUS natural area, although the par 4 tee shot is blind from the forward teeing areas.

Really like this golf course. The people working are very nice. Sarge is great. Course plays well. #4 is fun. I recommend it.
