What people say about (City Club Marietta)

Michael Foster

Having played this course since childhood, it's finally been brought to its full potential with proper management. There is significantly more playable grass and true course cuts, especially in green complexes, that used to be debris/mud/rock. Management has also seemingly begun to solve standing water issues that plagued the course's reputation for years. Overall, the views from the hilltop tee boxes are wonderful, and the course layout offers a unique combination of wooded shot-maker holes and a confluence of holes in the middle of the "bowl" in the hillside where you'll get to greet others, watch their shots, and take in the views. Greens can get very slick and pin placements excruciating at times. Overall, one of the prettiest public courses you'll ever play.

Course was nice, but the management of the course leaves a lot to be desired. That’s really what makes the experience anyway. Was not informed that we had been paired with a pair and another single. I had seen singles go out all day from my hotel room. Was only informed after i shelled out $100 + for a round and a rather disappointing rental set. They book times so close to each I was dodging balls on the greens. I legitimately had multiple balls land less than ten feet from me on the green when my group was ahead of pace of play. No fore, nothing the whole time. The guys I was with informed me that “no one rings the damn bell anymore and its the clubs fault for not enforcing/informing people of it. Additionally no one told us the drink cart wasn’t going around anymore. It passed us on the first hole, would have been great to get a beer then. Nothing like playing a round with cotton mouth. With that experience we decided to cut it short and only play 9 instead of 18. Went to the clubhouse to see about the possibility of a refund. Shop closed really early but the starter boy, Will, said that in the morning the shop would be open and we would be given a refund. He explicitly said refund. Given the time he told us was an hour after we were going to leave for a 10 hour drive, but we pushed it back anyway. Thankfully we found the guy because we had no idea what to do with my rental set. We go to the pro shop in the morning, already an hour behind schedule, and were told that we only could receive a rain check and it would only be about $7 because we technically booked a twilight rate. Was not informed of this at purchase the day before my round either. We told them we are from out of town. They said there was nothing they could do. Yes there is, you could give me a refund. Seems like a low cost for a happy customer and potentially a repeat customer out of someone that didn’t have that great of an experience. Moral of the story: if you’re looking at this course from your hotel room and feel enticed to go play, maybe go find somewhere that values you as a customer. From the other reviews I have read and talking to the, very nice, guys I was paired with, the unprofessionalism I experienced is the standard here.

Be careful of the old bait and switch when it comes to rates. I booked a tee time thru Golf Now for 9 holes with my son, Golf Now provides a complete run down of the rates when you book with exactly what's due at the course. I get to the course only to find the rates are incorrect and I end up being charged more than agreed upon. Called the golf pro at City Club the next day and was told that they don't partner with Golf Now and the rates online are incorrect, basically tough luck. Not impressed...also good luck on hole #1 dodging all the random range balls all over the place!
