I used to work at a Miromar Lakes, they claim to be the most prestigious in the country. Maybe it was number one 20 years ago, but there are so many other incredible country clubs in SWFL!!! There was a woman I worked with in her early 40s who made me uncomfortable multiple times. She would touch me inappropriately and even left bruises on my boss because she didn’t know how to keep her hands to herself. She was unlike anyone I had ever met. The staff laughed it off and tolerated it—so did I, because I felt like I had to. One day, she verbally attacked me in front of a member. I couldn’t hold back my emotions and broke down in tears. Another member at the bar noticed I was upset, looked me in the eye, and said, “You know it’s not you, right?” Through the tears welling up in my eyes, I nodded and said yes. His kindness meant the world to me. I stepped away to the bathroom to regain my composure but didn’t leave my shift—I didn’t want to let my team down. That night, I decided enough was enough. I filed a complaint against her. I wanted to file a harassment complaint, but HR convinced me to make it just a general complaint instead. In that moment, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this would somehow cost me my job. Everything seemed to settle down, and I started to believe everything would be okay. But two weeks before the season began, I got a call from the general manager informing me that I was being terminated because the club was “moving in a different direction.” When I asked if this had anything to do with what happened with that woman, he refused to give me a straight answer. All he said was, “I’m the boss, and I make the decisions.” It’s unfortunate that we live in a world where standing up for yourself often comes with the fear of retaliation. I wasn’t even given enough time to find another job before the season started. How do you do that to someone just for standing up for themselves? But honestly, I’m so much happier not working there. I don’t have to be in an environment where I feel like I have to conform just to keep a job. They need to do better and treat all employees fairly. I dedicated three seasons to that place—and for what? People’s time is valuable! Be mindful and think twice, even if you’re considering it as a place to live. I often sat on the sidelines, hearing employees gossip and mock the very members they served!
